Home lending improving despite May blip
The national total number of owner-occupier loans for dwellings (excluding refinancing) fell 2% in May to 26,880 loans in seasonally adjusted terms.

- As of 1 July, 45,000 new Home Guarantee Scheme places are available for first home buyers. Providing access to loans with a minimum 5% deposit lowers the entry hurdle which is arguably a greater barrier to the property market than housing affordability. The number of loans to first home buyers declined 3% m/m to 9,873 but we expect demand will moderately improve over the coming 12 months, with the policy tweaks announced in recent state budgets also providing support.
